Bernard Newman (b. 1903)

Reared in Missouri, Newman went abroad to study at the Art Student's League in Paris and began his career as a window dresser at Bergdorf Goodman in New York City. During his 12 years there he eventually became Head Designer. In 1933 he made the leap to film and worked on more than 20 movies in three years for RKO. In 1936 He left to return to his roots at Bergdorf Goodman, but made occasional returns to Hollywood when he designed the Ginger Rogers film Vivacious Lady (1937) and a one-year stint at Warner Brothers in 1946/47. With over 30 film credits to his name, Newman's movies include: Top Hat (1935, Ginger Rogers/Fred Astaire); Sylvia Scarlett (1935, Katherine Hepburn/Cary Grant); Follow the Fleet (1936, Ginger Rogers/Fred Astaire); Swing Time (1936, Ginger Rogers/Fred Astaire); You Can't Take It With You (1938, Jean Arthur/Jimmy Stewart).
